Crush

One of the things we did while we where in Hawaii was going to Turtle Beach. There, this big turtle kept getting washed up on the beach. At one point he washed up for a particularly long time. We took lots of pictures of him, and I named him Crush. Crush was having his dinner of seaweed on the rocks. You can see in this picture.

Hi Bonnie,

I love your turtle picture. I have seen sea turtles every time I have gone snorkeling in Hawaii. To me they look like ancient spaceships flying through the water. One time I was snorkeling at Shark's Cove near Auntie Kimber's house and I followed a sea turtle out where it was kind of deep, and there I saw nine large leopard bat rays in the water. They were so spooky looking--as if they were flying in slow motion. They came towards me and started to make a big circle around me. I was a little scared about that, so I swam out of their circle. Then they came again and formed a circle around me. Every time I would swim out, they would circle around again, flapping their large flat pectoral fins like wings.

It was really fascinating and unnerving at the same time! Later I looked them up online and learned that they are usually very curious and friendly and they were just checking me out to see what kind of creature I am. I have never seen them again since, but it was quite a thrilling encounter!

Love, Aunt Bonnie
