Butterflies

Today I caught a little moth and started getting intrested in butterflies for the day. I was looking for some pretty butterfly pictures when I found this one. I absolutley loved it! So I decided to put it on my blog. Butterflies are some of my favorite creatures. I think its amazing how they survive all that time in their cocoons. There wing patterns can be so amazing and beautiful. I really love butterflies. They are so cool!

Hi Bonnie,

I learned something interesting about butterflies and moths. To be very specific, both butterflies and moths have a "pupa" stage where they secrete a substance that hardens like a kind of shell (a chrysalis) around them while they undergo metamorphosis from a wormlike caterpillar to a flying insect. In the case of most moths, they will spin a silky cocoon around themselves in this stage too, but butterflies do not make cocoons; they just leave the hardened pupa exposed. So if you see a silky cocoon stuck on a branch, it has a moth inside of it, not a butterfly. I think a lot of people don't know this. I sure didn't until more recently.

Love, Aunt Bonnie
